As an educator, I have seen a wonderful movement begin to take place in math education. Students are being encouraged to explore and collaborate with their fellow mathematicians while playing math games. Math games help all children learn and discuss math concepts with their peers in an environment that is less threatening and fun! While all children love a good game, I find them to be especially beneficial to my students with special needs. Games take the pressure off of students and allow them to practice math concepts with their peers. In my current Math Workshop model, all of my students are playing carefully selected math games while they are not working with the teachers. My co-teacher and I have designed menus for each child in which we have chosen the concepts and games that are perfect for that child. This allows the children to practice the skills that they need. This is differentiation at its best! With this type of addition to the classroom, we have found organizing these games to be difficult. Many of my children struggle with independent problem solving, so if the games are difficult to identify or to find, they may get frustrated and give up. This new system of organization would allow me to clearly label and organize the different levels of instruction my students need. I can organize them by math domain, level of ability, and even with student names to make sure each student is maximizing their independent time. Thank you for helping me make this wonderful strategy accessible to my students!
