Kindergartners will use the Unifix cubes, counters, and buttons as manipulatives during math to build number sense. Unifix cubes are essential in teaching several early math concepts and skills such as addition and subtraction. Being able to manipulate the Unifix cubes helps students to see the patterns and create generalizations. The dinosaur, teddy bear, vehicle, and bug counters will be used for counting, number relationships, and so much more. We will use the translucent counters and buttons during math with ten frames to help students build a knowledge of our base ten number system. All of the materials will be used during small group and independent practice. My project is important because in the early elementary grades, students build a foundation for mathematics that they will need for the rest of their lives. If they do not develop a strong understanding of number sense, they will struggle with mathematics in years to come. These manipulatives will help my students build that foundation with a firm understanding of number sense along with early math concepts and skills.
