Principles of biotechnology is a two year pathway where students engage in real world applications of the concepts found in biotechnology. Key to much of this is the technology found in the labs that power most of the work that goes on. Unfortunately, much of it is very expensive and requires funding outside the normal budgets for a public school. This includes things like digestion and ligation of DNA (cutting and stitching together), PCR, cloning, protein isolation and imaging. Micropipettes are the basic tool needed in virtually all of this and we very much need replacements for the few that we do have in class.
