A love of reading is KEY in my class. My goal as a teacher is not just to increase reading level and ability but to teach students how to LOVE reading. That is not always an easy feat, and it is certainly not accomplished by reading books that are not hand-picked to meet the needs of each individual student like Fish in a Tree, Shiloh, and Holes. Students master reading skills best when they can apply them in an authentic setting, or, in this case, in an independent book of their choice like Walk Two Moons or Frindle. In my class, students use books daily that they have determined to be interesting and on their level in order to practice skills and strategies vital to reading success. Although school libraries and public libraries are phenomenal resources, they do not always accommodate the immediate need for engaging books for reluctant readers. By having a variety of books in my classroom library, independent reading will be more efficient and effective. Students will learn to be better readers and, in doing so, will strengthen their LOVE for reading.
