Life is full of challenges, but having perseverance can get you through anything. First grade is a great time to begin building the skills needed to have that perseverance that allows one to be successful. Early interventions are always best. Teaching first graders about what a growth mindset is and how to utilize a growth mindset sets them up for a future full of success. They can begin to practice the kind of thinking that will allow them to take on challenges with courage and a positive attitude, while still being able to practice appropriate ways of doing this in a safe environment. We will practice this kind of thinking through the use of a variety of picture books such as The Dot and Beautiful Oops! and activities, many of which are guided by the "The Growth Mindset Coach" text. By allowing the children opportunities to see how other children work through challenges, they can begin to develop their own growth mindset, allowing them to take on their own challenges more confidently.
