My students need authentic text to read, both fiction and non-fiction, as well as books to add to our classroom library. Since literacy is our main focus and big push at our school, many of my students need authentic literature to read that is on their independent reading level. Scholastic Magazines provide exposure to non-fiction text as well as exposure to events that are happening in today's society. They also provide the opportunity for students to take home and practice reading with their parents, for those who don't have access to appropriate text at home. The picture books such as The Paper Bag Princess, Salt in his Shoes and The Day the Crayons Quit will be books that my students will be able to read or have read to them during our read-aloud time that can be used to enforce our reading skills. The books will also be books that students can read during their independent reading time. Thank you for your help in making reading leaders.
