As a new ESOL teacher at my school, I inherited an old projector with a failing board. The vertical lines make it difficult for students to read what is projected, and it will get worse. If they have to struggle to see the print, they can lose their motivation to decode the words. The school does not have funds to repair or replace the projector or to provide a document camera. With a new projector and document camera, students will benefit from clear models of good sentences and paragraphs. Images will be easier to see, even from the back of the room. We can view pages of student work under the document camera or write directly onto a projected image of a printed page. We will enthusiastically share our writing and complete samples of other work. The students' language proficiency will soar.
