In my classroom we are movers. That is the nature of 1st graders. Finding ways to be creative in helping students to move without causing distraction is a challenge. Wobble chairs would allow my students to sit and focus while allowing their bodies to move. My school has adopted alternative seating as a way to support students to sit and focus while allowing their bodies to move. It gives the classroom some flexibility and students' control of their learning environment. With wobble chairs my 1st graders will learn the value of sitting to do their work. Let's face it, sometimes the task demands that. However, with the rise of learning challenges, particularly in younger students, we must find ways to accommodate their physical needs as well as mental. While wobble chairs function as chairs they also force the engagement of a body's core thus satisfying the need to wiggle. My students will benefit by having their physical needs met so they can concentrate on mental tasks.
