The language arts classroom of the twenty-first century is no longer restricted to handwritten essays and the reading of classic literature. Language arts classrooms today are all about teaching ways to communicate. Students use a variety of tools to reach and engage students. Everything from online programs for finding and assigning articles to use the full suite of online Google applications is used to engage students accustomed to using technology within the classroom.
Virtually reality in the classroom has proven itself a unique and engaging tool in the language arts classroom. Google cardboard has proven to be a successful tool used within my classroom for several years. Google cardboard allows students limited access to VR programs through their phones. We still use these simple cardboard devices as a catalyst for introducing VR possibilities in the workplace and as a means for introducing and expanding on topics touched on in articles, short stories, and novels.
Luckily for us, technology has evolved past simple cardboard devices for phones and brought to the market fully-fledged virtual reality devices capable of getting students to entirely different worlds at an affordable price.
Within the classroom, students would be able to take turns using the Oculus Quests to experience what VR truly has to offer. I will use the devices for research projects about how VR is used in the workplace and provide ways for students to experience other parts of the world.
These devices will also be shared with other departments in my school to do other unique and engaging projects.
