My students are 95% African American, 4% Hispanic and 1% Caucasian. They are also 98% low-income. It is critically important that my students are proud of their history and see a different side of their history. Being able to read a positive story about African American Women who accomplished amazing things and were the backbone of American History as well as Black History is important for them. They need to be exposed to all different types of opportunities that they didn't even know were possible! My students deserve the best education they can get. They deserve to know what is out in the world for them to go conquer and I believe that reading this book, seeing what hard work can get you is just what they need! My students will be journaling with each night they read and bringing that back for discussion the next day. I am also their math teacher- so what a great way to get them involved with a job in math!! I can't wait to see their excitement and pride as they read such an inspiring book!
