My classroom was given iPads which are to be used for a variety of activities and tasks.
Technology has become such a critical part of our world and it is important to incorporate it into the classroom while also ensuring that the experiences are still meaningful and valuable to the students. One task we use the IPads for is a district-wide assessment on phonological awareness. Along with the iPads, we were given earphones for the students to use in order to take the tests. However, the earphones are not developmentally appropriate for my students. They often get distracted with trying to keep the earphones in rather than being able to fully engage and transfer their knowledge from their brains to the assessment. The use of headphones would allow for my students to focus on the task at hand, while not distracting their peers, and truly be able to convey their knowledge without being distracted by the challenges, discomfort, and frustration that comes with the earbuds.
Along with the assessments, the headphones will allow for my students to also engage more fully in reading comprehension, math games, etc. that also take place on the IPads. My students love using the IPads because it is something so prevalent in their lives, but I want to be able to make the experience as meaningful and enjoyable as possible in order to support their engagement and love for learning.
