The students in our class are primarily Autistic, but like the city of Los Angeles where the students live and go to school, we are a mixture of many cultures and abilities that strives to find acceptance amidst our diversity. We have students with very limited speech abilities, students who know very little English from far away lands, and one or two behavior issues for good measure. Sometimes it seems the only thing our entire class can easily engage and access are pieces of Art and Music, and so I would like to make it a part of our daily experience. One of our students is a highly gifted musician and could teach others in the class how to play, including myself. I also noticed that one way to engage other students at the school is by having our kids teach others how to do something. This helps open their view of what Autism is, and what our students are capable of. By connecting through music, the class itself becomes closer and we engage the school as a whole.
