In today's world, the community is involved in the education of its children. In our small school, we all work together to provide for the needs of others, whether it be support through physical, emotional or social means. The books requested will provide a basis for learning for all students and families, third grade through eighth grade, to learn and grow together. Since we are a Kindergarten through eighth grade school, the younger students will be able to share in the activities, but we are not going to overwhelm them with reading this novel. In class, the students will have daily activities and projects to develop reading and social skills. Each night families will share the reading of the selected book together and use the discussion guide to lead understanding. These books will be the backbone of this school-wide learning unit. Through this shared reading our community will learn to focus on the positive actions, such as kindness, friendship, and hope, as emphasized in the book. Our team of teachers have dedicated themselves to making this a successful and worthwhile learning activity.
