The set of novels will help expose my students what challenges a teenager can face when poor choices are made. Walter Dean Meyer's novel is a great depiction of the challenges faced by teens in low income communities. I want to expose them to what making good and bad choices in life can lead to. Many of them come from families that do not teach them the consequences of their actions. I like to do this through literature. This novel is a great read at this age level that keeps them engaged in relevant topics, as well as the elements of literature they need to be successful readers in high school.
