The novel Touching Spirit Bear is about restorative justice. We are presented with a teenager that our sensibilities encourage us to dislike and judge. However, rather than punitive and exclusionary forms of justice typical to youth reform, he is given the chance to embark on a restorative justice initiative in remote Alaska. Our school is rolling out a Restorative Justice initiative, also. We will be using restorative circles, guided both by volunteer students and teachers. The belief is that, having been subject to the hard toil of an exclusionary and punitive pandemic, the students will not respond well to the application of both, yet again, in school. The novel focuses on the idea of enduring a form of deep introspection, honestly examining one's motives, and seeing oneself clearly, bereft of excuse-making or blaming others. The class' discussions regarding the protagonist's journey (which culminates with his meeting his victim) will intersect effectively with the school's own Restorative Justice roll-out.
