Many students find the discomfort of traditional classroom seating to be a deterrent to their enjoyment of the learning process. With more and more students struggling with mental health issues like anxiety and depression, the flexible seating method allows for student choice and comfort. The advantages to flexible seating are abundant and for students who prefer the traditional school desk, they are given that option as well. Many of my own memories of high school involve the discomfort of sitting in a desk for seven hours a day. Even as an adult, I find it difficult to focus on the information that I am being presented if I am not comfortable in my surroundings. My flexible seating classroom will include a couch, bean bags, cushions on a rug with a shorter coffee table, stools with a square folding table for those who want to work in a small group, and traditional desks. My goal is that all students walk into my classroom and immediately feel cared for and heard in their feelings and desire to take control of their learning. Once those basic needs are met, students will then be more apt to get to work and actually find enjoyment in the learning process. I have moved toward the student driven style of learning in which students are given ideas and encouraged to take those ideas into their own discussion with their classmates. I enjoy hearing students take information from a lesson and apply that information to discussions with their classmates in ways in which I would have never thought. With the flexible seating classroom, students would have better opportunities to discuss with their peers and have genuine dialogue that leads to academic, social, and emotional growth.
