While technology engages students, it can also isolate them from each other. I try to balance my students' time between technology and print, as well as between independent and collaborative learning. Breakout kits offer students a hands-on, collaborative experience that challenges them in unexpected ways. Breakout kits recreate an escape room experience in a classroom. Students must answer questions to unlock clues and ultimately unlock a box before the other teams. The kits include a lockable box, a variety of locks (multidirectional, word, 4-digit,) a keyed padlock, USB drives, ultraviolet flashlights, ultraviolet or invisible markers, lockout hasps, hint cards, clue cards, and a 3-digit lockbox. By acting as a team, students must rely on each other to solve a series of challenging puzzles that can include questions about any subject area. In our language arts class, the questions could be about something they have read, literary devices, or a subject they have researched and studied. Breakout kits engage students in the learning and allow students opportunities to share talents that may otherwise go unrecognized in a language arts classroom.
