Supporting students' language development in any language is a primary goal of my teaching. Students who come to my classroom already reading in a language other than English should have the opportunity to strengthen their home language by reading grade-level appropriate, engaging books in their home language. Providing students with engaging YA texts written in Spanish will enable my English Language Learners to continue to grow in their home language, and to participate in grade-level activities and discussions with their peers. By 8th grade, many bilingual students feel embarrassed--or at least remain silent--about their language gifts! With this project, students who are lucky enough to know a second language will be able to show off their accomplishments and celebrate language!
