My first grade students need a comfortable, focused space during whole group instruction. Their little bodies need an alternative to hard chairs. By utilizing movement and flexible seating, students can engage in learning where they find success in the classroom. A large rug will give them this alternative. The rug is a space where we will learn phonics together, listen to literature, do number talks, and engage in classroom discourse. English language learners will have the opportunity to be included in visual learning while sentence frames will guide their speaking in this collaborative space. Comfort also plays a vital role in learning. By utilizing multiple seating options in the classroom, students can self-regulate their bodies and advocate for their own success.
