Having meaningful reading materials encourages students to become better readers. Scholastic News is an authentic magazine that integrates aspects of 4th grade content into the issue. Students make valuable connections to what they are reading and it sparks discussion! According to the Illinois Interactive Report Card, 94.1% of our students are living in poverty in conjunction with 72.3% being language learners. Our teachers are passionate about providing instruction to bridge the achievement and language gap, but we lack the necessary resources to meet them at their diverse academic and language proficiency levels. Our students also lack the educational materials and opportunities at home that so many of us take for granted. My students are always so excited to receive new materials and it really helps to boost
