I am a licensed mental health clinician in a public school district in San Diego, California. The students I work with struggle with symptoms of depression, anxiety, ADHD, OCD, and other mental health disorders. Their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors make it difficult for them to focus in class and build relationships with their teachers and peers. They feel isolated and frustrated on a daily basis. These students need a safe space and coping tools to help them thrive at school and learn all they can within the classroom. To help support them and teach them new skills, I provide them with individual and group therapy. Your generous donation will provide my students with the tools they need to keep calm and focused within the classroom and build positive relationships with their classmates. The fidget items and art supplies requested will help the students participate in their academics and engage in therapy. These tools will be used in a variety of ways, including creating coping skills boxes (using the paper mache boxes) that the students can use when feeling overwhelmed and to increase comfort in therapeutic sessions which will allow them to better participate and learn new skills. The Mystery Boxes will help students learn mindfulness, which will in turn facilitate their engagement in school. The decor/office items requested will help me create a safe and cozy space where my students can feel comfortable processing their feelings and learning new strategies to take into their classroom with them. The items chosen help to engage the students by using 4 of their 5 senses to help them feel calm and relaxed while in session.
