We've all heard it said that boys will be boys. However cliche, this old saying tends to exert itself in some of the most unexpected areas. My latest experience with this adage came in the form of a young man in my ninth grade English classroom who wanted to know if I had anything interesting that he could read. I took this question to heart. I thought I had a great collection of books in my classroom. Then I realized, I had a great collection of books for female readers. My male readers have little to choose from in my classroom library that appeals to a young man. I teach at a rural SC freshman academy. Our school has begun to integrate the philosophy of single-gender classes into our curriculum. I have a class this semester that is comprised of only male students. My male class, as is the case with all of my classes, is made up of lower-level readers who have scored below basic on the PACT test.
