My 25 3rd grade students are from diverse backgrounds. I am teaching them to thrive and learn with respect, persistence and cooperation. They work in our room for the first four hours of the day! Yes, four hours straight, everyday, before lunch. To keep them motivated and learning during this very long stretch of time I need to keep them engaged and comfortable. When I teach whole class or small group lessons, it is important for the students to move away from their desks, to be close and focused. We currently have a tile floor that is cold and hard, making it impossible for the students to get comfortable. I would love to have a carpet where they could sit in a circle, with groups or partners, or in rows facing me. Adding pillows to the classroom is a wonderful way to build motivation for reluctant readers. Children are much more interested in reading and learning when they have a safe and cozy place to sit comfortably. Squeezing in any incentives to reading time is always beneficial!
