My students are all emergent readers and are working hard on sight words. Our school subscribes to a reading program called Smarty Ants. This application / program is individualized to the student, and helps them learn to read and recognize letters and sounds through a video-game-like atmosphere. Students are excited to play games, but are learning valuable skills for reading at the same time. My students also enjoy listening to stories being read on sites such as Storyline.com. Our local library also has a program that allows patrons to check out books electronically. Students would be able to check out books of interest to read, and / or listen to on the e-reader. My students work best in the classroom, in small groups with few distractions, so e-readers in the room would be a great learning resource for them, as we would otherwise have to go to a computer lab, shared with other classes, to use valuable technology. We do not have computers in our classroom, and when we can borrow a laptop, it is usually just one at a time. It is difficult to have all of the students exposed to technology on a limited time schedule with one laptop. With individual e-readers, students can all be reading or working at the same time and for longer periods of time.
