Engage. Inspire. Empower. The three words of our school motto are echoed by the principal every morning as we listen to the morning announcements. This phrase is more than just a set of pretty words, however: it is a promise. A promise to each and every one of our students that the school community is dedicated to (and confident in) their potential and success. While they are definitely the simplest of tablets, a class set of Kindle Fires would allow my social studies lessons to transform from a routine march through outdated paragraphs of certain boredom to an enthralled sprint towards the ever-changing stream of certain knowledge. While my school fiercely intends to provide the best opportunities for our students, those without natural love for math, science, or engineering often find their passions less enhanced and explored through the powerful means of current technology. Indeed, as a lesser-prioritized subject, social studies students and teachers are often left to make excitement out of the most dry, dense, and aging textbooks in the entire school. Bringing my students into to the real world instead of the read world would not only allow them to have the most up-to-date knowledge, but would also serve to spark interesting in creating knowledge of their own. Overall, this project is aimed not only at content learning, but at content creation: the camera included on each Kindle Fire would serve as a great opportunity for my students to film their own interviews, documentaries, or even full-length lessons for their peers both present and future. This opportunity is far above the current means and capabilities -- and would present a far better educational experience than a textbook with pictures older than I am.
