My senior students will be using Contrast by Devin C. Hughes as a anchor text for a literature unit on interracial marriage during the Civil Rights movement. Students will be reading this in small groups and discussing in a book-club type setting how their lives were effected by these issues even though it seems like ancient history. Being able to see themselves in a text will make the text more relatable and will inspire great discussions in my classroom. We are pairing this gripping text with a science fiction graphic novel that emphasizes the racism of the past and present.
