The books "The Rose That Grew From Concrete", "Emako Blue", and "The Skin I'm In" will allow my students to discuss and explore issues that they face daily. Providing students with texts that are culturally relevant will help spark a love of reading in my students. The Rose That Grew From Concrete will help students explore poetry and learn about elements of poetry, hip hop, and spoken word. Emako Blue deals with the unexpected loss of a young lady, issues that they face in their community daily. The Skin I'm in explores the effect that bullying has on individuals. I believe the subject matter and its relevance to their lives will hook them and encourage them to keep reading, which will help them grow as readers and writers.
