No two struggling readers are the same. Often the difference between a student who makes progress and one who doesn't is the relationship a student has with books and reading. Students who dislike reading are reluctant readers; they avoid the task, show a lack of interest, and cannot name a favorite author or series. By not reading frequently, the students' struggles continue, despite effective instruction in the classroom. In our reading intervention classroom, we work hard to develop a love of reading in all of our students, but especially our reluctant readers by allowing and guiding them to self-select books that interest them. Whenever our readers ask about a book or series we do not have in our reading room library, we work hard to get it for them, often out of our own pockets. We can't pass up an opportunity to engage a reader who is beginning to show interest in the fastest way possible. You never know if that will be the book or series that finally sparks their interest! Each year the books kids request change, but graphic novels remain high on the list year after year. We have found it hard to keep up with finding new and interesting graphic novels for our kids to read. We have some big challenges this year with students who are really reluctant readers. We would love to have you help us fund our project to purchase new graphic novels for our library from AKJ Education so that we can turn our reluctant readers into voracious readers one awesome book at a time.
