My students love to read. Even more so, they love to be read to. We have an amazing library here and I have a pretty impressive classroom library building. I don't, however, have a class set of any novels. I would love to be able to teach an entire unit on a book. As a class, I could incorporate book clubs and encourage talk about a certain book. We could all be able to enjoy the same book and know the same characters. A whole-class novel is an incredible community builder. I think that by having the text in front of them, students will be much more engaged in their reading and it will facilitate a student-centered learning environment. I strongly believe that reading aloud has a valuable place in any ELA classroom. I have several English Language Learners that would benefit greatly from having the text in front of them to read along. Tuck Everlasting is one of my favorite novels to teach. It is beautifully written and it gives hundreds of opportunities for teachable moments, including theme, figurative language, imagery and foreshadowing. But most important, this book will get my 6th graders thinking!
