My students currently participate in a music therapy program and are just waiting to add the fun of floor drums! Music is multisensory and interactive and the addition of floor drums to our music therapy program would provide a new level of stimulation and learning for my students. For children with a variety of developmental challenges, drumming can be a vehicle to encourage improvement of many skills. The rhythm of drumming and the sound of the beats can promote language development on many levels. For some children, it can encourage their first sounds. For others, drumming can help improve articulation and the production of two and three word phrases. Drumming provides sensory input while increasing motor coordination, strength, hand eye coordination and imitation skills. Most of all, drumming is fun and engaging! Drumming can increase eye contact, shared enjoyment and provides a definite sense of " I can"!
