Our school is an elementary school in the inner city. Many students describe this school as a safe haven, when the community that surrounds it is often violent and dangerous for our children. Our students are primarily Hispanic or African American. As a special education teacher, many of my students are struggling learners who require extra support and accommodations. Many of my students do not enjoy reading. They are frustrated when they cannot read well, so they are discouraged to pick up a book. I want to change that. I want my students to know the power that they have when they can read, and the opportunities that will come their way if they do well in school. I know that my students can achieve, I know that they will be successful. It is my job to make them believe in themselves; allow them to believe that they are capable of great things. I want my classroom to be a place of tranquility and for the students to feel comfort and to take ownership in their learning.
