This book serves as a major unit within the course I've developed for my alternative students needing history credits: "The History of Medicine, Madness, and Silver Bullets." This book helps students to read and learn about first-hand account of the process of an individual seeking help, and being institutionalized. Moreover, it provides insight into how institutions for the "mad, crazy, and insane" might have looked during the middle of the 20th century. It then leads into medical ethics, and the ethical (or non-ethical) treatment of patients in medical facilities. Overall, this course will challenge my students' perceptions on how medicine worked and changed over the course of the past 100 years, and how they might begin to think about how government oversight intersects in the world of medical belief.
