Last year I started an activity I called first chapter Friday. Each Friday I would play the first chapter of an audiobook to expose them to different genres, different authors, and just different types of stories that they might never choose on their own. I really enjoyed this activity because so many students became interested in books that they never would have read otherwise. Students would ask to borrow my copies, go to the school library to check one out, or even to my great surprise and pleasure, Go to the public library over the weekend to check the book out. I absolutely loved hearing students complain when the chapter was over and I was walking toward my desk to turn off the audio, that they wanted to keep listening. The only struggle I had with this activity last year was not having enough copies of the book to loan out to kids in that moment where their interest was at its peak. I am asking for donations to purchase multiple copies of each of the books I will play on first chapter Friday during the school year. Hopefully this will get more books into the hands of more students.
