In math, my co-teacher and I have decided that math notebooks would be a great tool for students to use in their exploration of numbers and shapes, and a fantastic way to share their progress through the year with their families. In addition, our new ELLs need hands-on, experiential learning to make sense of numbers. Manipulatives help them build a more meaningful understanding. Because many of our students have no prior schooling, and they are all still learning to write, we thought unlined notebooks would be the best bet for these learners. Manipulatives in this order include linking shapes to help students learn shape names and make patterns, which will help them as they begin to see patterns in numbers, the foundation of flexible mathematical operations. How shapes fit together to make other shapes also helps students discover the basics of multiplication and division. These tools can help them build knowledge that will grow in years to come.
