Every day, our school participates in 30 minutes of sustained silent reading (SSR) after lunch. The main purpose of SSR is to provide students with a quiet, consistent space for them to dive into books that are on their independent reading levels. Research has shown that this time-on-text is crucial to literacy growth. Students also use this time to conference with their advisors about the books they are reading. These conferences happen in the same classroom where SSR takes place, due to limited space within the school. Unfortunately, the noise generated in these conferences can throw off the focus of other students in the room. Noise-cancelling headphones would drastically improve the "silent" aspect of SSR, in turn, helping our students grow their literacy skills.
