The students in my class need to have hands on constructive lessons. We had planned to have interactive lessons and presentations from the students. The idea was to have them take a topic or experiment and find a way to make it work or explore what they see. The first unit they will need these materials for is chemistry. We need hands-on lab experiments so they can manipulate materials. Many can't afford to purchase the kits for science class. These student will be able to plan, create, and print out their own data from their science project results. Many students had their supplies but lost them in the hurricane. When we did a survey asking them what they needed they said, "school supplies". They need to have construction paper and markers so that they can draw-label- color their data/idea illustrations. The students need rulers to make their data tables and they need the ink to print the pictures and other items that they need for their projects as well as to publish their work for display. Many of the students are displaced so taking materials back and forth from school to their current home is problematic. Having the storage bins helps provide each class a spot where they can store materials they need for their projects, a safe spot that they can count on so the papers don't get lost. We are trying to provide that safe "home" spot for them because we want them to be able to look at a phenomena, work on explaining it and show others their thinking. We don't want, I don't want, them to have to worry about keeping up with it when they are already worrying about where they are going to sleep or if they have a clean school uniforms.
