Minimal pairs are words that differ in only one phonological element. Children need to speak clearly, using the correct sounds, in order to make their request. Examples are: ring/wing, dog/dock, pat/bat. This activity teaches children that how and what they say makes a difference and it is important to say all the sounds correctly. There have been many times when I have witnessed "the light bulb going off" when children realize how to say a word correctly. Good communication skills is a trait that a child will use for the rest of their life.
