I teach in a large North Carolina middle school. My students come from diverse backgrounds -- African American, Caucasian, Hispanic, and Asian. The students love their experiences in art class and I love teaching them. Art class begins with a sketchbook prompt. Students write about art, respond to art, or draw from observation at the beginning of each class. Students discuss the prompt and then start working on their current studio project. Recent studio assignments include North Carolina face jugs, abstract painting, coil baskets, pop art style self-portraits, charcoal and graphite drawings, tapestry weaving, and visual journals.
