At Emereau Charter School, our focus in the music classroom involves innovation, professionalism, and fun. We spend time singing and playing instruments as in most music classes, but with the goal of becoming seasoned composers, in addition to being performers. We learn the elements of music, history, various cultures, important compositions, performance etiquette, music technology, vocal and instrumental technique, while learning also to write our own music. When students write and perform their own music, it gives them ownership over it that makes them excited about learning how to better create it. We learn basic sight-reading exercises and folk songs, but we want to have even more real-life applications of what we learn, which is why we put on one or two fully-staged musical productions each school year.
