I teach fifth grade reading and writing to approximately fifty students. Our classroom is run as a reading and writing workshop where students are taught to take charge of their reading and writing lives and invest themselves in the process of improving their literacy skills. In reading workshop, there is choice in reading materials, and the first skill that students learn is to select material that interests them and that they can read and understand independently. Writing workshop encourages creativity as students generate multiple topics, develop writing ideas based on those topics, and then take their ideas through the entire writing process with teacher conferences as needed throughout the process.
