I know that I need to maximize the limited instructional time I get with my ESL students. We focus on speaking, listening, reading and writing in the English language and align to literacy standards to help close the achievement gap. However, my students lack much content area knowledge and vocabulary integral to academic success and being a strong reader. I want to align my instruction to science and social studies standards to provide my students a wider range of content knowledge and academic language, while fostering and deepening literacy skills. I only have access to the same reading texts used by classroom teachers. This grant request is for Time Magazine for Kids These non-fiction magazines are high-quality, engaging reading material connected to science and social studies standards for my ESL classroom. These will be used every week and students will be able to take them home and share their reading and knowledge with families.
