The building our school just moved to is very loud and echoey. Noise travels far too easily between the halls and the classrooms and from classroom to classroom. Within the classroom during project work, the noise level makes it difficult for students to hear and understand instruction. The basis of my engineering class is for students to identify real problems that students can relate to and be able to solve. For this engineering project, my students will tackle the challenge of noisy classrooms and how to design sound reduction systems to bring the sound to a level that will better promote learning. By designing ways to use materials to make classrooms less noisy, not only will my students have learned how to use the engineering design process to solve a real problem in our school, but they will realize the value of helping others. Having these materials gives students agency and power to go through the Engineering Design Process and to be successful. Students will be given choices about how to solve the problem, by having available a variety of different materials that affect sound in different ways. They will be able to use the sound measuring meters to collect data to help them select optimal design ideas to create and know if their ideas are working. They will have the tools and adhesives they need to produce functional solutions and to improve them.
