This year our school is a pilot school for Mastery Learning. Mastery Learning is a model that says students will not move on to learning a new concept until they have mastered the concept that came before it. As a 5th grade team we have determined that our classrooms are not set up for success to accomplish our goal. We are set up for a class that will be taught in whole group lessons. This is not ideal since all of our students are not at the same academic level. Some might excel in one subject, while others struggle. Our classroom needs to be set up for fluid movement and comfort where students can work independently and in small group settings to achieve the highest learning possible. We will use the bar table as storage and a seating option for a small group of two. We have some very fidgety students who will benefit from the wobble stool and the yoga balls. As of now they can be a slight distraction to the other kids and the hope is that these will help. We will use the 5-piece stool set in our small group with teacher instruction area. The chairs we have in that table now can only fit four regular sized chair uncomfortably. The lap desks will be used for the students working independently. This will allow them to move about the room freely. Finally, they will be able to use the mats so they are more comfortable while sitting on the floor.
