Sensory approaches that are incorporated in the classroom may help to provide a learning environment better suited to meet the needs of today’s diverse student body. Up to an estimated 20% of students have sensory challenges which can contribute to over and under-stimulation. This often results in difficulties with learning and behavior. Sensory approaches to education such as alternative seating which increases sensory input have been shown to increase attention and promote self-regulation in turn leading to improved classroom behavior and academic performance. “Studies on classroom seating suggest that sustained sitting in regular classroom chairs is unhealthy for children’s bodies, particularly their backs” (Schilling & Schwartz, 2004) Balance ball chairs are a healthy and fun alternative to a chair. Kids will be excited to sit in this chair to learn, increase sensory motor input and adopt healthy posture. Statistics have shown that kids are able to focus more intently when actively balancing their body on a balance ball. Recently, exercise balls have been replacing standard seating in classrooms in Europe and North America. Results have shown the following: · Students enjoy sitting on them · Concentration improves · Excess energy is burned off · Students become more physically fit · Builds abs · Less noise There is a strong relationship between movement and attention.  School can be an excruciating environment for a child with ADHD, given the need to sit still and listen intently to a teacher for the better part of a day. This will improve outcomes for children by providing them with a natural and comfortable way to move while learning in a classroom environment.
