21st century classrooms should be engaging, motivating, and inspiring to children. Today’s classrooms should challenge traditional ideas including the idea of sitting in a desk all day long. I want my students to be productive, so I need to make a space to encourage and motivate students to do that. As a teacher, I see assessments and curriculum as somewhat inflexible, but our physical environments can be. I can make a productive place where all of the learning happens by providing my students with flexible places to work and collaborate. I am looking to add several choices for my students such as yoga balls, wobble stools, stools, resistance bands, and other seating. A classroom with flexible seating and work areas allows students to have more control of their environment and more responsibility. Think about sitting at a desk all day long. It’s uncomfortable and not very motivating. Even we adults are more productive and happy when we are in a comfortable environment. Flexible work areas would allow students to move to collaborate with others easily. A study done by Steelcase Education stated that a classrooms designed to support participative learning increased student engagement compared to the traditional rows of desks. Please consider helping me make my classroom a more flexible and collaborative space.
