We plan to transform one of our gyms into a sensory room. Our focus & intent is to create a space for our students to explore their senses & experience a variety of ways to output emotions. A sensory room will help students process their feelings as they explore endless opportunities to learn how to control emotions, understand and collaborate with others as well as make positive choices. Children build their emotional awareness as they live life & encounter both moments of joy & sadness, but when a child is brought up in an environment where emotions are expressed in an unhealthy & inappropriate manner, there's an increase of behavior problems as well as a decrease in academic performance. The gym is in a central location & we plan on creating a schedule for classes to take social emotional learning breaks which is why we will need a sound system. There is enough room to provide both loud & quiet sensory areas. Loud ares will have the punching bag, exercise balls, ball pit & battle ropes. The quiet sensory areas will have an area to study, where we will use the bouncy bands & weighted lap pads for students who need a quiet space to complete classwork and/or tests. The sand table & pop up tent with calming light will also be in the quiet area. Below are some benefits of a sensory room -increase concentration and focus attention (weighted lap pads & bouncy bands) -develop or reactivate senses of hearing, sight, smell, touch, and taste (sand table) -heighten awareness and improve alertness (ball pitt & exercise balls) -improve coordination and motor development (punching bag & battle ropes) -promote cognitive development by increased brain function
