Reading is by far the most important subject I teach in first grade. What I hear most from parents is that their child loves to read. The only problem is that parents do not have resources to read with them at home. The library isn't an option because most parents don't drive. Our school library is dingy and unorganized, making it nearly impossible for students to find books they can read on their own. My classroom does not have enough books for me to even teach reading with, let alone send home. So now what? More than half of my first grade class is below grade level in reading. Most are reading at a kindergarten level, if that, and that is because we do not equip them with the tools they need to be successful in reading. The reading levels in my classroom span from very low to high levels, and my students need books that accommodate their individual reading levels. They need books to read that they will be successful with; books that will make them confident readers. They need books that they can bring home to their families and proudly read. By donating to my project, you are helping me foster a love for reading in 26 little first grade hearts and minds. But that's not it - you're also helping me develop confidence in those same minds, something absolutely necessary to be successful in this world.
