This is my first year as a school psychologist and as much as I learned in school I'm learning twice that amount every day on the job. My students struggle with controlling their emotions and can be disruptive with their behavior. They need tools to help them recognize what they are feeling and strategies to help them control their impulses. Many of my students are working on fundamental skills like anger management, emotional regulation, and communication skills. There are already fantastic evidence based programs to help students build these skills, but my schools don't have access to them. Coupled with consistency, patience, and understanding my students are capable of learning how to function in a school environment. These fundamental skills can help unlock better instruction as well as better relationships. They are the building blocks for future success.
