Literature is a critical tool to learning about the world around us. For many of my Pre-K students; their time with me in my classroom is their first introduction into the amazing world of books and the joy and knowledge that they bring. If you walked into my classroom during one of our many daily read-alouds, you would be able to hear a pin drop as my students watch with wonder and focus at the stories depicted in the pages of our book. Children's books invite my students to gain a better understanding of themselves and the world around them; but the vast majority of books in our classroom library do not reflect my students' identities, cultural backgrounds, and experiences. The disappointing reality is that almost 40% of our population is comprised of people of color, yet on average only 9% of published children's books are written about African-American characters. With this project I seek to surround my students with rich literature that reflects their experiences; to fill my classroom with stories and African-American characters that my students can fall in love with and see themselves in. In additional to providing authentic texts that feature African American characters and content, I would also like to add classroom books that are written by African American authors. African-American, Latino, and Native American authors combined only accounted for 7% of new children's books published in recent years. My students deserve to feel empowered and inspired by authors that they can relate to and look up to. Lastly, a small portion of funding will go to book bins so that we can revamp our library organization structure and be able to better serve our students. Thank you so much for your support!
