Part of the curriculum for my Special Education program is teaching functional life skills, which includes cooking. Due to my students various disabilities they need repeated practice and direct instruction with life skills including learning how to help prepare meals in the kitchen. In the classroom, students will learn how to measure ingredients using measuring utensils, follow directions, read a recipe, and prepare a meal safely using hot pads when removing the baking pans out of the toaster oven. When we work on cooking in the classroom the students are responsible for formulating a shopping list, finding the items in the grocery store and completing the exchange with the cashier upon purchase of their items. Many of my students would not be able to independently learn how to cook without the direct instruction provided as part of their educational program. The parents of my students love when their children are able to help at home after learning how to safely prepare meals and recipes at school in my classroom.
